unable to open certain things

Hi there,
i'm currently having trouble with a vista system where i cannot open up certain files like Quickbooks, i click on the icon and all that happens is the mouse icon spins and whatever i clicked the option through seems to freeze up, if it was through the start menu that becomes unusable, same with desktop. It does the same if i try to access my firewall settings, it'll just freeze up the firewall page. the only way to reset this is to log out or restart. Any ideas?

try use cccleaner couple of times and check for Windows updates.
