Unable to power on after after trying to reset BIOS

For the past month or so I have been having a strange issue I wasn't sure how to troubleshoot. Whenever my PC (custom build gaming desktop) would boot at the first Windows logo the computer would shut off. On the next boot it would work fine and boot fully. Even if I restarted it would boot fine on the first try until about 24 hours later when it would fail to startup again. Tried a few things to fix but it didn't cause any further issues and was hard to pin down since I could only reproduce the error every 24 hours or so.

Fast forward to last night I was having trouble with a peripheral being recognized via USB (showing unknown device, driver unavailable etc, verified peripheral was working on laptop) so in troubleshooting this issue I found a suggestion to reset the BIOS settings so I took out the CMOS battery on my MSI Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard to try and go back to default settings. Did this put everything back together had the desktop shut down on first startup again, and USB issue was not fixed. Figured I would try once more in case I didn't give enough time for the power to run out in motherboard and didn't get a full reset. This time after putting it back together I get no boot, no fans, no error message, no lights. The only thing I have is the power button on the motherboard lights up when plugged into power.

Had to go to work this morning so I didn't have time to troubleshoot for long but I did try to remove RAM, GPU, hard drive and boot with the same result. I am hoping I didn't short anything on the board with static as I am not seeing any of this particular board available new so I would likely have to replace more parts.

Any ideas or tips on how to troubleshoot this? Looking for advice on the best way to find the problem as I do not have any extra parts to test like an extra power supply etc.

1| By putting he system back together, I'm assuming you also took the CPU out? If so you will need to inspect the CPU socket for bent/damaged pins.

2| Are you on the latest BIOS revision?

3| Did you remove the battery for at least 15 minutes before replacing it? It'd also be a good idea to replace the battery with a fresh cell in case the previous one had lost it's charge.

4| You can find a used Z97 board off Ebay or the classifieds section but lets hope we don't get to this point.

5| You could use one stick of ram and see if the issue persists when breadboarded.

6| Try and borrow a 750W PSU of reliable quality from a friend and see if the system boots without an issue. It could also be a grounding issue.

No I did not take the CPU out so that will not be the issue (hopefully). I am not sure about the BIOS version but I have not updated it on this motherboard. I am also unable to get to the BIOS screen to verify the revision.

I took the battery out for about a min the first time and around 10 the second time. I will get a new battery tomorrow and test that.

I tested the PSU with a multimeter and it seemed to be putting out the correct wattage. The interesting thing was the PSU fan had not come on while trying to boot but it did come on when I shorted the PSU pins as described in this article: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-manually-test-a-power-supply-with-a-multimeter-2626158 . I can try a friends PSU this weekend to see if that fixes it as well.

Turns out this was the answer. Replaced the battery and it booted up again. Haven't had an issue with booting either.
