Hey guys I think there's something wrong with my external hard drive. When I plug it in, it doesn't show up on my computer, and when it did, it shows as a CD-ROM drive. If i double/right click it, it just freezes my computer and unable to access it.

I tried going into my disk management, and the same thing. It doesn't load unless I unplug my HDD.

The only thing I remember from using it last time was, I was transferring large files and it somehow got wonky and I had to use my other hdd to complete the transfer.

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, @Zeokar_1!

I'd recommend you swap the USB cable and also the USB port where your HDD is connected to the computer. I'd also suggest you find another computer and check how it will get recognized there. The issue definitely sounds concerning, so make sure you backup all your important files from the drive as soon as you can access it!

Unfortunately, if it's not a failed connection, you could be dealing with a failed hard drive. Make sure you also run your HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool or a third-party alternative to determine the health and SMART status of the hard drive.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting. Hope this helps you! :)
