I have a Asus TUF X570 PRO and a Samsung M2 980 PRO hard drive.
After I built the computer I initially started it with my old Samsung 970 M2 hard drive.
Initially it wouldn't start until CSM was enabled. Both drives were identified in BIOS as storage and not bootable.
When CSM was enabled it booted fine.
After getting everything (including BIOS) updated, I used the Samsung Migration tool to copy the old hard drive to the new, and took out the 970 and rebooted. It booted fine.
Now I need to enable secure boot to install Windows 11.
I tried multiple BIOS configurations, but as long as CSM is enabled, cant make it do a secure boot.

I read a thread that talks about the MBR (on a different motherboard),
but dont know what to do to check or what to do if its the problem.

Thanks

answere is pretty simple
to enable secure boot, CSM needs to be turned off
to have bootable drive with CSM off, drive needs to have GPT partition

easy solution, backup what you can, disable CSM, insert bootable windows installer media, wipe drive and do fresh windows install (while CSM is disabled)

I was kinda worried that this was the solution... Is this possible...
Can I backup to my older 970 using Samsung Migration.
Then do your solution..
disable CSM, insert bootable windows installer media, wipe drive and do fresh windows install (while CSM is disabled)

And then go back to to the migration tool and copy the backup back to the 980.
My question is, will copying the old drive, copy the MBR back onto the 980 and erase the GPT, or does the GPT stay there??

If you convert MBR to GPT you should be able to disable CSM and use UEFI.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...d=_3dokakatfgkf6gakw3uygvphcu2xqkowp13a33yi00
and use windows repair or in place upgrade to fix windows boot if needed. I would still make backup first with Macrium Reflect free because when you restore from it there's an option to "Deploy to new hardware" and rescue USB made out of MR can fix any BOOT problems should they arise.

I misread the post by @CountMike and realized that what he is saying is that Microsoft has an in place tool to do the conversion located on the link he provided. I will mark the problem solved after I do a backup and follow that very simple process.

I understand that.. I am confident I can get a clean windows done and create the GPT needed.

But will the backup convert the GPT back to a MBR?
It will restore to just what it was when backup i

Yes that tool can convert to GPT without data loss but yopu have to switch BIOS from Legacy/CSM to UEFI after conversion. to get full benefit, use TPM and Safe boot and W11.
I suggest to make a full disk backup and make USB rescue USB from MR, just in case.

No. Wrong link.
That is not, how you convert from MBR to GPT.
Use mbr2gpt utility instead.

Thank you... There is actually already a complete backup already ,,because I have the old Samsung 970 M2 drive from my old computer which transferred over to the new drive to begin with.. The only thing I would I would "lose" is my Whatsapp conversations that have occurred in the last 3-4 days.. That I can deal with.

Still have a problem.. Read and understand everything linked to..

however I get this message when trying to use mbr2gpt

mbr2gpt /validate /disk:0 /allowfullos

MBR2GPT: Attempting to validate disk 0
MBR2GPT: Retrieving layout of disk
MBR2GPT: Validating layout, disk sector size is: 512 bytes
Disk layout validation failed for disk 0

I tried this the C: with windows running
Also tried it from PE environment from a USB with same results

Disk 0 is a MBR partition
Disk 0 partition 1 is 500mb NTFS
and the C: drive is next

What is different from the MS instruction video is,,, he goes right from saying here is my computer into the PE environment
I dont understand how he gets there. So I am bring up a command prompt (as administrator) and running
mbr2gpt /validate /disk:0 /allowfullos which was shown in other youtube videos and working

What would cause disk validation to fail? how to fix?

I know there is an error file...it cant be opened..
I moved a copy to the desk and it says there is a formatting problem

This page contains the following errors:
error on line 63 at column 1: Extra content at the end of the document
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

Opening it in notepad doesnt show what the errors, or I cant understand what I am seeing

<xml xmlns:s="uuid:BDC6E3F0-6DA3-11d1-A2A3-00AA00C14882"

You could convert from MBR to GPT using Minitool partition wizard free (without data loss).
But after such conversion drive becomes unbootable. It requires bootloader to be recreated.

After MBR to GPT conversion you'd have to boot from windows installation media in command prompt mode (press Shift+F10) and recreate bootloader.
If you get any errors then stop immediately.
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
(select 1863GB disk)
list partition
select partition 1
(select 500MB bootloader partition, partition number is 1 or 2)
delete partition
create partition efi
format fs=fat32 quick
assign letter=H
list volume
(find volume letter for 1862GB windows OS partition. I'll assume it's letter F: , replace with actual drive letter)
exit
bcdboot F:\windows /s H:
Last message should be boot files created successfully.

Might also need this:
bootsect /nt60 H: /force
Then reboot into BIOS, and set first boot device to Windows Boot Manager.
Should be able to boot into windows.

I think this is beyond my ability if I run into an error.
It wouldnt hurt to try because I have the old hard drive available for immediate use.

The other problem is..
Where do I get the windows installation media?
The original drive was an upgrade from win7

SOLUTION

In looking at my options,,,
Felt it might be easier on my limited number of remaining brain cells and available Barcelo Gran Anejo rum if I paid EaseUS Partition Master $20 for a 1 month subscription

It converted to GPT with only minor fiddling with the BIOS
