Unable to see C root files

Hi not sure if this is the correct place to ask for help for this problem but here goes:

I recently discovered that I am unable to see many files that I have on C:\. They are on the root not in a folder. I can see them if I do a save as for a file and select that location. If I do that I can see them. However I am unable to see these directly.

-I have already triple and quadruple checked that I have the folder view option set to "Show Hidden Files". I have even toggled this setting on and off to set if that made a difference.

-I have checked for permissions and I think I can rule that out. I am the only user. There is no logon. Just to try to help I expanded permissions to all user types

-I have run the "Attrib -h" routine from the command prompt 4 times.

Still no files

-I decided to copy my entire C contents to another folder. Still unable to see the files.

They ARE there. I just don't know how to see them.

-I run Norton 360 updated. No viruses have been detected with it.

So I am out of ideas. I would wipe the drive and reload the OS to fix but I need many of those files on the root directory. So catch 22 there.

So if anyone can offer some help I would be glad to take it.

Thanks
