Unable to select 144hz

I bought the ASUS VG248 144hz monitor and also bought http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-DVI-Adapter-Cable/dp/B001TH7T2U/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1419657143&sr=1-1&keywords=amazonbasics+hdmi+to+dvi+adapter+cable
to connect the monitor to my Lenovo y510 laptop. However, when i go to the advanced settings, I am only able to choose 59 or 60 hz.
My monitor resolution is also 1920x1080.

I don't think HDMI allows for 144hz.

pretty simple only a dual link dvi or a displayport cables can support 144hz. hdmi cannot support that hz

What kind of wire would I need? The display port cable does not fit on my laptop, so that is why im connecting it through the hdmi.

if you dont have a dvi or a display port on your laptop you wont get to 144hz. hdmi does not support 144hz sorry

why did you buy a 144hz monitor for a laptop? as Sutter said, unless you have something other then VGA and HDMI ports you will not get 144hz

unfortunately not a lot of laptops are gonna drive a 144hz monitor well if your gaming unless its high end laptop ive got a i7 an a 290x so titanfall is awsome at 144fps i usually take v sync off drop to 120 hz buttery smoothy no lag input not many laptops have the gpu for it
