i am having a problem setting up a home network with my linksys router (model is the befsr41 or something like that) with sbc (wirespeed modem). i already had this setup for 2 years, until a week ago when sbc went down for a full day and i was unable to reconnect through my router after that. i had to connect using the enternet software, with my computer directly connected to the modem, so as youc an see this poses a problem because no one else can use the internet now. so i thought it was a router problem, called linksys, was on the phone with tech support with guys who couldnt speak english for over 5 horus trying to fix it. finally, i just rma'd the router thinking it was a faulty one. so i got the new router this week and i tried to quickly set the network up, i plugged in all the computers to the ports, put the wan fire intot he dsl modem, and tried getting into the router's admin page to set it up, default is 192.168.1.1, but everytime it says its unable to display page. all the wires are fine, everything is plugged in too. i tried to ping the router but it said it times out. the lights on the router are all lit up except for the lights on the ports which represents that they are connected. so what is going on and why is it not working like it should be? please help me ebcause other people in my house need internet too for work and school, thanks.

Reset the modem and then make sure your computer is getting a 192.168.1.* address. You can do this by opening a command prompt and typing

IPCONFIG /ALL

After this try the admin page again. If it comes up make sure to set the connection type to PPPoE and put in the information to allow the router to connect and don't forget to reset the admin password.

Yes, I made it past newbie w00t.

You gone into the connections part of your browser and set it to detect (or bot as the case may be) proxy settings?

My setup requires no proxy, and if it's set on, there's no browser.

All IPs, default gateway and subnet numbers. Check em again. Also double check your DNS IPs are correct.

Double check that the address are of the same network.
Also, try the cables on another network, you'll never know.
Surely u should be able to at least ping the router!

To echo a couple people in here, double check the subnet mask. You wouldn't be able to ping a computer on a different subnet without a gateway. I imagine your router is set at 255.255.255.0 and your computer is at 255.255.0.0., or the opposite. Change your computer's address to match.
