[SOLVED] Unable to stabilize PC after RAM upgrade

Hello!

I upgraded my RAM from 16 GB to 32 GB, but I'm unable to keep my computer stable when running the RAM at stock frequency, 3600 Mhz, which my motherboard is supposed to support. When I set it to 3600, sometimes it doesn't POST or just randomly reboots under load when multitasking or gaming. I tried enabling D.O.C.P. for 3600 Mhz and also increasing DRAM voltage in increments up to v1.40. The voltage increase helped as the random reboot doesn't occur as often, but it's still an issue. Also tried CMOS reset.

Any ideas on what I could do? I tried googling, but I'm not very knowledgeable on RAM. Should I return the RAM and get something else? Is this RAM just crap or am I just unlucky?

Appreciate any tips or ideas to solve this.

Specifications:
  • Motherboard: ASUS Rog Strix B450-F Gaming
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 3600 16 GB x 2 (CMW32GX4M2Z3600C18)
  • Old RAM: Upgraded from HyperX DDR-4 3200 8 GB x 2, but I realized my computer always had it running on 2666
  • GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3070 8GB GAMING OC
  • SSD: WD Blue 3D M.2 512 GB

Hey there,

What PSU are you running in your rig?

Does the old ram still work flawlessly? Have you configures the ram manually? So, that would mean no DOCP, but setting voltage manually at 1.35, and then the primary timings, leaving everything else on auto.

Although you've reset CMOS, is your bios up to date?

Hi,

Thanks for the help!

I'm using a 550W Fractal Design Integra (80 Plus Bronze). The old RAM works flawlessly and never had issues. I will test the manual voltage and timings now. Thanks for the tip.

Asus doesn't even have QVL for ryzen 3000 series chips, on that board. I would suspect it isn't supported. B450 was kinda hit and miss on speeds beyond 3200.

Yeah, seems like it. So swapping to another RAM wouldn't necessarily help? What if I purchased a 3200 RAM with lower timings? The current RAM is C18.

The only reason I want 3600 Mhz instead of 3200 Mhz is due to Star Citizen where I get 20+ more frames on 3600. The game is very unlike others and relies a lot on RAM and CPU, but I never knew it could have such an impact on game performance.

Edit: I updated BIOS prior to the upgrade, running latest version

With an a Ryzen cpu, 3600 CL18 and 3200 CL16 are roughly the same performance. Personally, I would go with this. With Crucial, you always know you are going to get Micron chips.

Ok, I might just do that unless it stabilizes with the manual timings. Thanks for the tip! (y)
