unable to upgrade

when i try yo upgrade a win 7 ultimate 64 bit it start showing me that " checking for updates" for several hours but does nt show the downloadable content,even when i make chrome as my default browser my security essentials software stop updating its upgrading by an update tab displayed in it. plz let me know that how can i use windows update and how can i use (like b4) microsoft security essentials update (by clicking on its update tab instead of downloading all the offline manual updates)
