Going from console to PC gaming! Been researching a lot the past few months and will be ready to pull the trigger right after memorial day!

Approximate Purchase Date: Right after memorial day; September 9th-12th


Budget Range: $2000 all together


System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming - Movies - Web browsing - Microsoft office

Parts Not Required: Mouse (g700)


Preferred Website(s) for Parts: NewEgg, I live close enough to a Microcenter but would rather avoid them unless they have another sweet deal like the current $80 off cpu/mobo


Country of Origin: U.S.


Parts Preferences: Intel/ Nvidia....I think

Overclocking: Not right away but definitely once I am comfortable enough to figure it out!


SLI or Crossfire: 99.9% NO! but maybe if there is a sweet deal on another 580 in due time.


Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 @ 23-25"

I will probably just buy the 23.5" Asus led backlit monitor locally here ($185).
Also, should I purchase a CPU cooler with out planning to overclock right away?

For a $2000 build you cant go past crossfire 6950's but if you insist on Nvidia then thats your call. But you will get better value with AMD.

Also you could save some money on the case, HAF-X is awesome, I have one, and would recommend it to just about anyone, but just saying, you could save some cash there as your build doesn't need such a large and feature rich case.

[Edit] just to clarify why on the SSD's, the ones mentioned are up to 550MB/s read, 520MB's write, the Intel is only slightly cheaper and only up to 270MB/s read, 130MB/s write.

I'm confused, Is that not what I said? Except different SSD, and yes the crucial M4 is also very good, I forgot about that one.

[Edit] to clarify, the only thing I question in your outline above is the 580, when for around the same price you can get crossfire 6950's which perform better. Here a video comparison http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlX4o2ZXIKs

I was simply offering an alternative (and 3x6950's > 2* 580 so theres your upgradability) but I do not need to and cant be bothered to argue with you, I understand your point but I read it as this:

Thanks for the replies! I was going to get the crucial SSD 128gb. There are two models. One ships with an old driver version that you have to flash to use (lame) and the other one has had a few DOA reviews where the Intel had none. I will probably go with the crucial.

As far as the ASrock Mobo: I was interested in a few of them because the price😛erformance is quite good! However, they only offer a one year warranty so I will probably pass and get a reputable 3yr brand.

And the crossfire is a great suggestion! I would definitely get better performance, but I just don't want to deal with any multi-GPU set up right away. Also, I will be using a 1920x1080 monitor so I think that the 580 lightning should be overkill now, and hopefully last me a couple years.

At your res. I would switch down to a 570 and use the extra hundred you save and up grade your cooler( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835242001 ). Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B CPU Cooler
Also unless you plan on getting crazy in the near future i would switch out the haf x to something more manageable. Instead go with a Haf 922 save another hundred. At this point you could use that for upgrading something like maybe your monitor. Or take the two hundred that you saved buy another SSD and and raid 0 them.

Either way you had a nice setup to start with. Just some ideas... Good Luck!
