OK to start off with im not a gamer at all and I know this card is overkill for me, but I got it for free when I built the PC. The problem is that its very noisy at the stock settings, so Ive been using ATI tray tool to fool around with the fan speeds and Ive gotten it much quieter. But Id like to know if it would make sense to under clock it to keep it running cooler at the lower fan speeds?? I have the fan set on auto right now with these settings
0 - 10%
55- 25%
60- 35%
65- 75%
70- 100%

It usually stays at around 55c or so under normal pc use, no gaming. What are the safe temps for these cards?? Should I under clock it?? How low can I go??
thanks
Frank

No problem with underclocking. From memory I think someone ran a similar card down to about 250MHz core speed, 300MHz should be OK also.
Just have to try a few different settings & see which works for you.

My fan runs 23% up to about 55'c then gets faster from there.
I had a X800pro & have a X850XTPE, stock coolers.
Never have a problem with fan noise at default 23% settings. Idles at 42~44'c.

I have an X800GTO witht the same GPU on it as an X800XL. I use ATItool to overclock mine in 3D and underclock in 2D. I also use ATItool to controll the fan. For 2D, I believe (I'm using my laptop at the moment) that I have it set to 100MHz core, 250MHz memory and fan 24%. At those settings, the GPU is usually low to mid 40s Celcius and the card is virtually silent.

I hope this helps.

55C at idle is a bit high. Ensuring that your case is clean and that air can flow freely can reduce temps by quite a bit. I have an X800XL, stock ATI reference model, and it idles at 41C.

Well its actually more like 51c at idle and thats with the fan set at 10%. Alsso you have to remeber this PC is modded to run nearly silently so it doesnt have the airflow of a normal PC with a bunch of fans running at stock speeds.
