Hmmm.......

More damn trouble...

When running the game in circuit mode, it stutters a bit on the first
lap....
but on all the other laps it works fine.

But it also stutters a bit in career mode.
Tried turning off backround stuff...like Norton and so on, but that
makes no difference.

Any one had this problem ?

Running it on a 2.8Ghz P4 with 1.5Gb ram and Radeon 9800 AIW

Sounds odd...perhaps fragmented harddrive (causing choppy load times
whenever something is loaded for the first time)? Try defragmenting.

Probably the only lap where you can see the other AI cars?
Once past them, they don't get rendered anymore.

I agree. However I`m not so sure that has to do with this and that it will
work. It might has to do with something else. I will think about it and tell
you what I believe, (If defragmenting won`t work...)

A friend of mine had a similar problem with the game hooking every now and
then. After turning the force-feed off on his controller it came right.
Might be worth a try if you do use a gamepad

Hmmm......

Did a de-frag....without swap-file, then re-set the swap file...did
another de-frag..
Re-installed UG2 (Again !).....no luck...same problem.

So, installed it on my other physical HDD...and Hey Presto ! It runs
smooth as silk.

Took a look at my HDD settings, and it turns out that windows has set my
first HDD (The one with windows on), to PIO mode, rather than DMA mode
(2nd HDD is set to DMA mode 2).

So with PIO mode having a slower transfer speed than DMA..I Guess thats
whats doing it ?
Am I getting close, perhaps ??

And how to I get windows to change the settings to DMA ?

Ho hum...arn't computers fun !

:)

Thanks for the suggestions all !

Most likely yes. PIO is much, much slower then (U)DMA. Go to Control
panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device manager: IDE/ATAPI.

Select primary and/or secondary and look at the properties sheet
(advanced section I think, don't have english windows). You should see
something that says "DMA, if available" or PIO. Select DMA, if not
already so. Click OK to close all windows, and reboot. This should fix
the problem. If your HDD still resets to PIO it's a bigger problem,
perhaps some incorrect BIOS settings.

Well, when I noticed the pio setting....I uninstalled the IDE/ATAPI
controllers........
Re-booted, windows then re-installed them...and after another re-boot,
bingo !
The IDE/ATAPI controller settings ended up as...DMA 5 for HDD and DMA 2
For DVD drive!

So...re-installed UG2 back on main drive....and problem solved.
What a fuss, but at least I can't blame the game for a change !
