Just have a few questions about Overclocking

Ok I don't quite understand something. If I overclock my cpu but don't have it unlocked what happens does it boot and just not change the multi or will it not boot and give you a warning?

Now if I do have the CPU unlocked and it boots fine after you overclock a 2400 XP form FBS @ 133 x15 to FBS @166 x13.5 and but your bois doesn't support overclocking with the x13.5 (I know that the Asus A7N8X deluxe doesn't support some multis) what would happen?

Here is why I ask, I overclocked my CPU and after turning off the watchdog and setting it all up in the bios I boot fine into windows but when I take a look at the speed of my computer I am never at the right speed. Real Example: Set the FBS @166 and multi @13.5 and when I boot and check speed Im clocked at 1.5Ghz (FBS @100 and multi @15) I have tried this with diffrent multis all with about the same result, basicly not the speed I asked it to be. I have also tried lower the FBS to 133 and redo the test with diffrent multis but it almost always changes my FBS to 100 and always keeps my multi @15. Is this because my bois doesn't support the overclocking or is it because my CPU is locked or what?

I am Completely confused.

Thanks for your time.

System Specs

Athlon XP 2400+ (should come factory unlocked, didn't check)

Asus A7N8X Deluxe (New Beta bois and have tryed 1001G with tests and same as with the new Beta)

R9700 Pro

2x252 PC2700 OCsystem Ram

(I didn't check the L1 bridge when I got it because I didn't know to and now I would have to take appart the computer to find out and then remove the thermal paste from the prossesor and I don't know exactly what to use to remove the paste safely)

Well if the CPU is fully locked then there would be no multiplier change at all. I heard nForce2 boards also unlock T-bred Bs (XP2400+ and higher) so probably your CPU is unlocked by the mobo.
I can't explain these symptons... it looks like the BIOS has a bug or some bridges on the CPU are shorting out (atleast... I also got strange result when I didn't unlock my CPU properly).

My dual-PSU PC is so powerfull that the neighbourhood dimms when I turn it on 😱

I can't explain your OC problem, but there's no magic to removing the heatsink from the CPU if you want to do a physical check. Thermal paste can be wiped off with any old cloth, rag, or paper towel, or your finger. As long as you use something non-abrasive you should be ok.

Well I took off the HSF and took a look at the CPU and guess what I found out???? Well my CPU is unlocked *shakes head* so I don't think its a problem with the CPU also I found out last night that my stepping is H on my CPU. I just tried using bois Version 1001C and it failed also putting my Multi to 15 and my FBS to 100 when I set it at 133 FBS and 13.5 Multi and 166 FBS and 13.5 multi. So it looks like Im just at a complete loss right now and it looks like even experts cant help me out here.

Thanks for your time

Well I don't know how I don't know why but now I can OC perfectly. One minute I was trying out all diffrent kinds of things, trying to get it to work going thought the bois trying all diffrent multies and fsb and got piss after finding out that 7.5 and 9.5 worked but only with low Fsb I had no clue why so I went over almost all the things I could handle before I almost exploded. Then I took out the motherboard took off the heat sink again and took a look at the CPU again just to make sure I didn't miss anything before and seeing that I didn't, I put it back in put the heat sink back on and started up the computer and started checking things out trying things in the bois again messing around with the Multi and when I started checking out the multies that didn't work before they work and now I have my 2400 OCed to a 2800 :) and Im going to push it to about as far as I can.

Thanks for the help you guys have been great :)
