Question Undervolting

SyCoREAPER

Splendid
I've never undervolted before so I decided to try on my laptop.

It was stable, ran Cinebench 23 (because that's the last version I have my scores from). My score was almost 200-300 points lower on multi and running warmer per HWInfo.

Performance aside, isn't UV supposed to lower temps?

It is, but on benchmarks, its not going to be noticeable, cause you're pushing the CPU to its max.

What were the temps like when not undervolted? if they were already near the throttling limit, or were throttling already, you wont see a dip in temps. (atleast on benchmarks).

In-game, you might be able to see some dip in temps.

What CPU do you have?

Some recent Intel CPUs have Undervolt Protection or IA-CEP, Current Excursion Protection enabled. This can reduce performance significantly. Cinebench scores can drop in half.

An undervolt will lower temps as long as it is working correctly. If you were previously power limit throttling, your CPU temperature will be pretty much the same.

Keep in mind this is a laptop and AMD.
Idle was about 5-8c higher and max temps were similar but the undervolt hovered at the peak of 99°c as where it was maybe 94-95. This was the case when I removed the undervolt too. (AMD laptop max is 105°c but I still don't like it that close.

Specifically it's a 2021 Asus ROG Strix Advantage Edition.
It has a 5900HX processor.

So based on what you're stating, in certain scenarios the statements online that undervolting "will not hurt performance" isn't true but rather circumstantial?

I do use my laptop mainly for side gaming when I don't feel like booting up my main PC. On occasion I use it along side my main PC for CPU intensive tasks outside gaming. Calculations, Encoding/Decoding, etc..

So it may seem like the tool I was using wasn't working correctly based on your responses. I guess I'll try again with something else just the see what the temps do.
