unidentified network issue

I'm having issues troubleshooting my teenagers laptop. He cannot connect to a good known ethernet connection.

Laptop Toshiba Satelitte
Windows 8
Network adapters all current and enabled
Ping loopback successful
Ping google.com - ping request could not find host.
Network adapter set to obtain ip address automatically

Thats your local IP address.

That means your his laptop isn't connected to the internet at all.

Try this.

Open your network connection.

Go to TCP/IP settings for IPV4

Note down your IP Address configuration and anything else written.

Then click on obtain an IP address automatically.
Obtain DNS server automatically
Click Okay.

Try connecting.

If it doesn't connect, enter your own settings again , the ones you saved and try to connect again.

Let me know if it works or not.

I entered the ip address info from my laptop to my sons as I was not able to obtain one automatically. Still didn't connect. I ran a diagnostic and it said to reboot my router. I know that this works fine as when I connect it to my pc, it works fine. I also reset the tcpip stack.

All right now try this.

Go to command prompt.

Type the following if you've not alredy done this...

netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh winsock reset catalog

Restart your computer (important)

Then try connecting again.

Went back to private ip of 169.254.133.24.

Could this be a bad nic card? How would I determine that?

No this is not a bad NIC card. It's a more common problem than you think.

Did you recently install windows? Did this problem start after a while, or as soon as you bought the laptop.

And funnily enough, Microsoft has no suitable fix for this. There are different workarounds, but everyone uses his/her own way.

This is a new laptop that has barely been used. It was from last year. My son goes to school in another state. He told me he hasn't been able to use it. So it stopped working almost immediately. I did some of the other fixes posted elsewhere but nothing worked.

Can you give me the specifications of Toshiba.

Honestly, I had the same problem, I changed routers, cards, and what nots.

In the end, upgrading to 8.1 for free actually worked.

But on another computer of mine, simply upgrading the BIOS worked.

How can I upgrade with no internet connection? Large usb? Did you get the upgrade from microsoft? I'm trying a system restore now but I'm not thinking this will work.

Well in my case, it was a problem, that happened on and off.

So on a lucky day, i upgraded to 8.1 from microsoft

You're right, without an internet connection how would you upgrade...

I could point you towards a place where you can get it...

But you'd have to find the CD key yourself as it's not allowed here...
