How can I be sure as to which programs to un-install on my computer? There are some that I don't even know what they are. One is called ATI Catalyst Install manager. I have no idea how it got installed.

it is the setup for installing the control panel for your graphics card .....cause you have an amd graphics card....
you should never uninstall such softwares ....if you uninstall it you will not be able to view the settings for your graphics card......it may be used to update your graphic drivers .....before uninstalling any software which you dont know ,just check from the net whether is it needed for any hardware in your PC.To be on the safer side you can uninstall softwares which you yourself installed and decided its ok with you without such softwares in your PC.

ATI Catalyst Install manager is a utility provided by the motherboard manufacturer, was probably installed when system was put together, I just bought a new Asrock MB and this was one of the utilities on the disc that come with it.
