Universal remote for computer monitor?

I have an Asus computer monitor, not a TV. Can I program a universal remote to control sound for the monitor or is this not possible?

You can, I use the microsoft media centre remote with my Pc all the time, works charms.
But I think you can actually get a phone application to control your PC with via Wifi connection
