Unlocked i5 vs Hyperthreaded i7 (non-k)

Im wondering, i5 6600k build, with Z170 Chipset mobo and CPU Cooler VS i7 6700 build with B150 Chipset mobo and Stock cooler. Which is better for gaming and some editing.

will be pairing with MSI GTX 970. Thank you

Well I would always get the 6600k with a Z170 motherboard, overclock it and watch it <mod edit> on the 6700 in 90% of the occasions.

The i5-6600k is the better choice.

When it comes to gaming, the hyperthreading offered by the i7 simply has a negligible effect. A overclocked i5 will out perform a non-oc i7 in almost every game.

Hyperthreading will help speeds in editing, but as that is only a secondary use, the above still stands (and if your OC is good enough, the i5 will match it anyway).

Plus, there are more benefits offered by the Z170 platform.

Sorry thats totally incorrect. An overclocked i5-6600k will beat an i7 6700 in almost every game and will match the i7 in editing if the overclock is good.

that's one of the option too..get 6700 and asrock z170 motherboard and you can overclock it. BUt i was in the same dillema and I went with 6700 over i5 any day

With the difference in price between an i5-6600k and i7-6700 being what it is (£80 in the UK), I couldn't agree that that is the best option unless money is not a factor for the OP.

As the OPs main use is gaming, the money saved by going for the i5 over the i7 could be put to much better use in a more powerful GPU instead.

Once you get to Z170 level of board, it really comes down to personal preference. For example, do you need a certain number or SATA ports? Or a certain amount of USB 3.0 ports? Do you prefer vertical or horizontal facing SATA ports? Which colour scheme do you prefer? etc etc

Any z170 board would be a good choice, as long as it's got what you want

lets not talk about the price of CPU itself only, as i mentioned earlier, the price of components such as mobo, cpu cooler for i5 is same/a litte bit gap as i7, with b150 mobo and stock cooler

An i5 6400 can be overclocked to the same frequency as the 6600, so you can save money there. Performance will be the same.

i ve got no knowledge of mobo (since its my very first build), but i will using Samsung Pro 850 Evo 250GB SSD and with only one 1TB Blue from WD. Colour scheme is not a problem for me

If your biased more towards gaming, this would be a great rig for 1080p. If you do a lot of edit/rendering or multi tasking, substitute the i7 6700.

I wouldn't buy i5 for gaming, because i5 isn't enough in modern games anymore. Almost all my gamer friends got i7 CPUs now, who can afford them of course. I remember when one of my friends was having bad fps in GTA 5, because his i5 was reaching 99% on his R9 295X2. I suggested him i7 4790k & after getting it, his CPU never went that high & he also got almost twice better fps.

I have to disagree nokturrduk84. These benchmarks show something quite different. Getting almost twice the fps going from an i5 to i7 on gta v sounds bogus.

This shows a 2-4fps difference at 1080p with a gtx titan.

None of these shows even close to double the fps. I think that friend had some serious configuration issues or something. In that video I saw both cpu and gpu at 98% usage. If it was a cpu bottleneck the gpu should have been much less.
