Unlocked pipelines

I've had my Pipelines on my 6800 GS unlocked for about a month now and I was wondering if they could have a problem. In select games (half-life 2, F.E.A.R) when I look at certain metal objects they have rapidly moving lines on them but not on any other objects. Does this sound like anything you know about?

I believe it has to do with the pipelines I unlocked but I'm not completely sure.

Ok I realize I am not being very helpful in providing an example so I will provide some images:

And this one:

It also happens in Half Life 2 but much less often
Any ideas about what could be causing it?

thanks in advance

I have the same problem with my x850pe. Whenever it gets over 75C and is running way overclocked it starts making those lines to. Maybe check the heat? Also try relocking the pipes to see if it works better.

Of course I do.

Update: Relocking my pipelines and cooling the chip (by 15c) and reducing clock speeds have not fixed the problem would this be a potentially defective card :?:

hmm...mabie it has a "screw you" chip installed in it. jk obviously.

going from assumptions, it's my belief that you game a lot. and you say you've had this done for about a month. so about a month of gaming and ineffective cooling could have damaged the card. just a stab in the dark.

throw me a bone...
how much you game a week?
do you monitor your tempratures? if so, what are they under load in games?
how overclocked is the card?
when you get to gaming, how long are you playing, and at what resolutions with what features enabled?

last thing, get riva tuner (read the manual if you dont know how to use it) and try turning all of your fans to 100% at all times in the 'low level system settings' option from the 'target adapter' drop down menu.

Just a thought.

Maybe there is a driver bug which only manifests itself at the AA and AF that are set at the moment.

Try setting different values for AA, AF, and texture quality. Maybe that will make a difference.

Yes I game a lot (i dont know how much maybe ~20 per week?)

i didnt have the card on a regular overclock very long (because overclocking it was sooooo fun) but lately I have been using it at 400 Mhz Core and 1075-1100 Memory

I have monitored temperatures ( but not regularly) I have never seen it go above 75c and it usually games around 60-65 im guessing (slowdown threshold is 120c)

It could have been more a couple of weeks ago because it was in one of those computer desks and it didnt get very good airflow at all but i had fan settings at about 75% in rivatuner.

I now currently have it at 100% fan on all settings.

Any ideas?

Ok but I'll try that tomorrow I am tired

Edit: if it's any help my case is open while its running and its idle at 50c core (35c ambient)

PaCanc might have something there...what version drivers are you using? try doing an uninstall and reinstall a fresh set if screwing around with the display settings doesnt work.

also, not having good airflow is as bad as throwing the card in a microwave and just turning it on.

and lets put it this way. i have a 7950gx2 (which is notorious for running hot as hell). my cores are at 48 bottom, 51 top card at idle. under full load in need for speed carbon, my top card is at like 93 - 110 depending on what race i'm in, and the bottom card doesnt go over 80.

unlikely that the card is screwed though...if that was the case, you wouldnt be having this rendering problem with just the metal.

very interesting, fullerms, very interesting indeed...
have heard about his before, but never had a nice explanation as that.

I can see the same effect on my monitor. It has nothing to do with the unlocking, its called the moire effect.

Look here http://www.mathematik.com/Moire/ and read this http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci768750,00.html

Hope this helps.

Same thing happens when scanning pictures from magazines and newspapers. It occurs because of the pattern the ink is placed on the paper doesn't jibe with the way the scanner picks up the the image. It is an affect of visual aliasing (not like the jaggies in games). Where the frequency of the medium (both visual or audio) being sampled is more than half the frequency at which it's being sampled. There is a formula that describes this known as Nyquist's Theorem. It says that the sample rate must be at least twice that of the maximum frequency of the signal being sampled (say in audio). There's a little more to the theorem than that but that's the watered down version of it. Now in the case of scanning an image, say the ink is layed down in parallel lines of .02 inches apart. The scanner has to increase the sample rate by taking a sample at least .01 inches or less to avoid the aliasing effect. In the case of visual media, another trick is to break up the scanning frequency, and not scan at regular intervals. This can help avoid visual aliasing or moire, and most scanning software has a magazine or newsprint setting to correct for this condition. With audio, you have to sample the maximum frequency that will be recorded at a frequency of at least twice that frequency. Since humans hear up to 18KHz - 20KHz (at least when we are babies and our hearing hasn't been damaged yet), we should be sampling music at at least 40KHz. Ever wonder why CD quality is set at 44KHz?? Anyway that is the basics of the moire effect.

Try different driver and settings. I have similar problems with BF2 last year as some of the sandbags looks like solid gold. The newer driver fixed the problem on my graphics card.

Alright now I'm relieved that simple driver refresh fixed the problem. I guess I should have tried that BEFORE i posted this topic  Weird issue though

Thanks for all the help!!

First off, glad to hear you fixed it.
Second off, had the same issue in fear on my old 6800gt.

Turnes out that when I had transparency antialiasing turned to supersampling it would the same thing your screenshots show.
When I turned it to multisampling, it would not.

Could be a driver issue or an issue with the game engines.

i had problems with fear and my 68gt.
bought fear the day it came out, played it on the 68gt and it played
like an fx5 series card.

didnt play it till 4 months or more later, whenever the 1.05 patch
came out .

patched it and it played like a whole new game.
brighter, faster, and no artifacts.
