Unlocking pipes

I recently bought a eVGA 6800gs and unlocked all the pixel and vertex pipes. Rivatuner now shows 16 and 6. The card runs great with no artifacts even with OCing (knock on wood). My question is this: as far as the driver knows (82.12 Beta) my card is a GS with 12/5. Does the driver not need to be aware of the unlocked pipes in order for them to be operational? I guess I am wondering if there would be a performance boost if the bios was flashed to think it was a GT. I know people turn on the pipes and get artifacts. That tells me that they are active without further tweaking. Just wondering....

be very careful flashing graphics cards. i fried my 6800 recently doing that
