When starting up my laptop 2 messages pop up saying "Could not load or run "(
6 small squares appear)" specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists
on you computer or remove the reference to it in the registry".

I'm at a total loss as I don't know what I should remove.
Strolling about in the registry is no option for me.

Until a few days ago I never had the slightest problem with my computer,
the above problem started, all of a sudden, 3 days ago.
Can anyone advise me how to get back to a normal startup, I'd be very
grateful for your help.

This sounds like a virus or trojn. The six boxes mean that the characters
in the file name have no ASCII representation, and that is extremely
suspicious.

Are you running antivius software? If so, perform a system scan.

Are you running a firewall? If not, install one immediately.

Never connect a PC to the internet which is not running both of these types
of programs.

Next, install and run Ad-aware (www.lavasoft.com) and Spybot
(www.spybot.info). There are others by the way.

Let us hope that your don't need to reinstall Windows because that task is
quite time consuming.

> Believe me, I did all the things you mentioned. I deleted the two programs from the Startup-tab and then the computer jumped immediately to the diagnostic mode! I can simply not remove these troublesome programs which seem to be hidden in the registry. and as long as they do not show a name I can't do anything at all.
Before using this Vaio laptop
I installed Norton-antivirus(it was OEM and I renewed the subsciption each
year) Ad-Aware, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware and do a scan of the whole
system for virusses AND spyware every WEEK. I have been using the system
firewall as well as the Microsoft firewall and I've been always extremely
careful with the security items on the computer!!!!
So, is there any other advice?
Thank you, Joan
