[SOLVED] Unpinning on File Explorer

Solution
Important: Before making any registry changes, you should always make a backup. It only takes a few minutes and it could be well worth the time. If things go wrong with the registry edits below, you could restore your registry in a few minutes if you have a backup. If not, you could spend a lot more time re-installing Windows.

Absolute legend. These worked great except for the D drive fix. I ran the reg fix but still seems to be appearing even after restarting explorer:

Any other ideas for this?

I wasn't expecting that. It's likely that Windows automatically detects all drives on bootup (as it should) and if there is a new drive it automatically adds it. Otherwise a new hard drive wouldn't show up, right?

I'm not sure what to do. Other ideas welcome.

The interesting thing is only that D: drive shows up and not the other SSD (E: drive). Why would D: drive be there but not E: drive?

A little more digging around and I've come up with this.
  • All drives are shown under ThisPC on the left of Explorer
  • By default, removable drives are shown on the left also.
  • Disc/CD drives (and other similar drives) only show up if there is a disc in the drive.
I can verify that this is how my Win10 system works. Source where I got the info: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials...cate-drives-navigation-pane-windows-10-a.html

My guess is that 1 of your SSDs is somehow being detected as a removable, while the other is not. More investigation is needed first. There is a potential fix for this, but I wouldn't do it just yet. Wait to see how this thread goes first. Hold on to that registry backup that you made also.

Provide the info that USAFRet asked for.

This can be a BIOS setting too, my hdd shows as a removable drive. I just know better.

what motherboard do you have?
If Gardenman is correct, its possible there is a setting in BIOS that stops ssd showing as removable, and therefore it will stop showing after you make the changes suggested in the elevenforums post in windows. (I have a headache so I didn't look at post)

I can find manual for motherboard and see what I find.

Given that is my motherboard, I guess I need to find it in my manual (its not obvious)

page 31 - https://download.gigabyte.com/FileL...2_e_v1.pdf?v=01f88767fb5b58cab7d7d233fb757234
  1. Settings tab of Advanced view in bios
  2. IO ports
  3. SATA Config
  4. Chipset SATA Port Hot Plug - Disable this
its on by default so any SATA drives would show this way

That only works if you have a SATA SSD, if its nvme, I don't think they have hot plug ability.
It would show on the nvme choice that is directly above SATA config in the IO Ports menu, if it exists.
Had to watch this video to find the menu as manual doesn't explain everything
At the 23: 40 mark but he doesn't say much about it. Was just nice to find it

Disabling hot plug has fixed it!

Thank you all.
