unRAID Server Ethernet Setup

Hello,

I recently built a NAS server and installed a trial version of unRAID on it. I am able to boot into the GUI just fine but am having issues getting it connected to ethernet. I do not have access to a wired connection near the box so i tried plugging into my windows 10 machine and sharing the internet connection through its ethernet port. I am able to assign an IP and DNS server as well as login to it via my windows 10 machine with the IP address. However, when trying to activate the trial key and get an array setup, it says it cannon contact key-server. I have tried everything i can think of to get it to connect. Is it possible to connect an unRAID server this way?

If it is a one time activation thing I would carry the server to the router plug it in and then move it back.

I suspect you are trying to use ICS. You need to follow the instructions on microsofts site. It should do what you want but you are now using your expensive computer as a stupid router. You have to be very careful about what you do on the machine to not degrade the network performance of the data passing thorough it.

You really don't want to run a NAS on wireless anyway. I would consider powerline networks to get a connection back to to your router. If poweline is not a option they do make a wireless nic card that connects via ethernet. It is called a client-bridge but now days they generally only sell more advanced devices called repeaters or extenders but you can disable the extra functions. Simple client bridges used to be sold for tv and game consoles that only had ethernet but now they all have wireless.
