Unstable FPS drop in all games

I recently built a new computer here are the specs:
G3258 (OC to 4.2ghz)
EVGA 750Ti 2gb
Asus B85M-G R2.0
8GB ram
EVGA 500W PSU
500GB HD
Monitor running at 1920x1080

When playing games like battlefield 3 on high settings, the fps fluctuates. It goes from 40fps and suddenly drops to below 20fps for one second and then goes back up to 30+ and then again down to below 20fps. Whenever the fps drops down, the game slows down and this makes the game unplayable. I tried lowering the graphics settings and it raises the fps but it still drops below 20 randomly.

did you try lowering your overclock and then running bf3 to see if it happens still? i assume you're checking your temps during gaming sessions to assess if its thermal throttling or not?

The temps are normal, 50 degrees Celsius max for cpu and core temps are around 60-70 degrees Celsius. I have tried the game at stock speed (3.2ghz) and it lowers the overall fps and still drops to below 20 randomly.

As I mentioned before, I have tried lowering the graphic settings. It boosts the overall fps but it still drops below 20 randomly. This also happens in other games such as black ops, which I should easily max out.

You may not be able to eliminate it entirely. I had the same issues with my old dual-core in all DX11 games. And just scanning old CPU benchmarks from 2010, it looks like BLOPS requires 3 threads to get smooth gameplay.

I found out the reason, it was because I had a process running in the background that was taking up 50% of my CPU usage. I uninstalled that program and it is back to normal. I get 40-60fps now on Battlefield 4 on med-high settings. Just because the game is optimized for multi-core processors doesn't mean a dual core can't run it well. As long as you over-clock it, it can run it as well as a multi-core processor.

I'm late, but this isn't 100%. just cause tom's hardware says a g3258 pentium overclocked to 4.8ghz can almost keep up with a quad core i5 in BF4 SINGLEPLAYER doesn't mean the gameplay is going to be the same. if you look at the frametime variance, the oc'ed g3258 is at the back of the pack. and if you've ever played a game with high or uneven frametime, 1000,0000,000000 fps doesnt matter to me when the game is a stuttering, seizure-inducing mess and, well.....it frickin sucks a dingaling. with BF4 multiplayer, not the singleplayer which uses much less CPU power, even a 3.0ghz quad i5 is going to play wayyy smoother.

Maybe that is the case, but the g3258 is only 65$ compared to almost 200$ for the cheapest i5. For 1/4 the price, you can have almost the same performance. The 40-60fps on med-high settings I mentioned before is for BF4 multiplayer. In the single-player I never drop below 60fps.
