Unsupported signal. Check your device output

Connecting Toshiba Laptop to Sony Bravia TV, via VGA to HDMI Cable,1.8 M with Audio lead and USB lead. But get "Unsupported signal. Check your device output" on the TV.
I get sound but no picture.
(Previously when connected via VGA lead, I had picture but no sound).

What do your Windows Display settings say? Make sure resolution and refresh rate match those of your TV

I tried different display settings (on PC), but don't know what they ought to be to match the TV.

Any adapter from analog (VGA) output to digital input would have to be an active one, just a straight cable wouldn't do.
