I have XP pro sp2 and installed latest updates from MS the other night. On
rebooting, I now have a blank desktop with the following message-
"Explorer.exe - Entry Point Not Found".....The procedure entry point
AssocGetPerceivedType could not be located in the dynamic link library
SHLWAPI.dll".
I have put in the XP disc and gone into safe mode which brings up all users
plus an extra user - Administrator. Aministrator is asking for a password
which I have no idea what it is-never put one. So it does seem I can get in
from there.
There are about 5 other options but they seem to take me the same blank
desktop screen.

Are there any thoughts how to fix this. eg. a particular prompt, how to get
into the setup etc.

If I can get to safe mode maybe I can do a system restore to about a week
ago - but don't know if this will work either.

Thanks for any help.

Geoff

Try the Administrator account in Safe Mode with a blank password.

Thanks null,
Did try, but the Administrator will not accept a blank password it still
wanted a password of some kind. I tried some old ones we have used in the
past but nothing worked. damm.
I went in to all users via safe mode but all went to a black screen with the
words safe mode around it, but nothing else would happen-just a black sceen.
Can get into safe mode with command prompt but i don't know what to put in
to even try it.
Thanks for the suggestion

Do a google search for 'John the Ripper' download it to a CD and boot to
the CD - you'll be able to change the Administrator's password there. Be
careful with it though.
