Unusual Lagging?

My computer lags when I plug anything into the usb ports (my 500gb external drive, my 1 gb flash drive) and when I switch window tabs (from my itunes folder to any other folder) but my laptop does have that problem and its a lot less powerful than the desktop I built any answers or recommendations?

I have low technical knowledge on the subject, but I have an external HDD plugged into my current system and it slows the entire system down. It has to start spinning up whenever I open anything and it is obviously slower than my internal drive. Try unplugging the external?

How much RAM are you using?
Open the task manager and watch the cpu usage when doing those tasks.
