I am using Win 7 with Office 2007 and it works OK. Occasionally I find other things going slowly and when I check Windows Task Manager I find either Word or Powerpoint running and occupying c. 50% CPU - this is when I am NOT using Word or PPT. It's simple task to stop these processes but I'd like them not to start when I'm not invoking them as they are slowing other work down.

Clarification: Its very simple, Word app and/or Powerpoint app seem to be running without my invoking them and are then consuming c. 50% of CPU each time. How do I stop them starting up when I'm not using them?

You really want to talk to an OFFICE expert, but since you been waiting for days...

From what I recall, Office asked to if you want certain features during installation, it says something like "Quick Load, Fast Indexing" blah-blah, those are the culprits. I don't remember enough to tell you exactly how/where to uninstall them. This would be the permanent solution.

For temporary relief, can try the following, use Task Manager, click the offending service(s), and you should be able to (1)Manually stop them, and (2)re-configure their startup behavior from AUTO to MANUAL.
