I am planning on building one of the most kickass PC's that doubles as a large file server. It is going to be a super gaming rig and large 320-400 TB file server all in one. I am going to build it using a lateral file cabinet which will be sealed and modified to be airtight and filled with mineral oil to keep all of the hard drives and the other components cool. This build is not going to be cheap and what I need to know is. The only part of the machine not submerged is the very top portion with the disc drives, SD reader and plugs.

1. How do I build such a large RAID array with so many hard drives?
2. Is there different kinds (like grades) of mineral oil? Where can I get 40-55 Gal? How much per gal?
3. What will I need to circulate and cool the oil?
4. What kind of motherboard will I need to power this beast and give me super high BUS speeds?

1. Beyond a certain point you need to get pci raid cards. If your also planning on gaming this will be an issue as in order to run lots of drives your pci slots will be filled up.
2. I tried to find prices of mineral oil but I wouldn't find anything. I remember seeing something on revision 3 of 3$ per 12 oz. 36$ per gallon
3. You would need to spread out case fans, they will work in oil, but not as fast.
4. You would need a motherboard with lots of pci connectors

Hard drives also are unable to work under water, and in the course of about 1 month they will be dead.

I guess I will have to rethink my build. I still want to build a mineral oil PC but may have to build a separate file server and find another way of keeping it cool.
