I currently have an amd phenom II x4 955 overclocked to 3.7Ghz (due to hot summer, and autumn apparently) paired with 8gb corsair vengeance, a Samsung 840pro, 2 tb of hdd storage, thermaltake 700w 80plus silver psu and an old amd/ati 5770 gpu.
My screen is dell u2412 1920x1200@60Hz.
My main usage of the pc is for programming, gaming and video encoding (and internet browsing of course).
It’s time for a cpu, motherboard and gpu upgrade.
I’m between an amd 8320 cpu and an i5 4670k. I know about the performance and power disadvantage that amd has but here is the thing:
Lets say that I buy a motherboard for around 140 euro for both platforms.
8320s price is around 150euros and i5 price is around 215, there is a 65price difference there. Both of them are going to overclock at around 4.4ghz or slightly less.
As for the graphics card I can get:
280x for 281 euro (gigabyte oc windforce 3x)
an 270x for 200 euro (msi gaming)
an 7950 for 265euro (club 3d or sapphire)
gtx 760 for 250 euro (gigabyte oc windforce 3x).
As anyone can see the cpu price difference clearly reflects to a better gpu choice for a given budget (going for 7950 instead of 7870 for example).
Power consumption is also a thing and I now that this favors the i5 but I don’t know if it compensate anything for an average of 10 hour (2 hour gaming max) usage per day, even when oc.
Im not sure whats the best choise worse cpu for better gpu or worse gpu for better cpu and power consumption?
