My brother's laptop got dropped now it's stuck at startup with a black screen.

OS: Windows 8.1
Type: Lenovo Laptop

- I can't access safe mode.
- It's a Lenovo laptop and it has a Lenovo Recovery menu which I can access.
- I tried doing a system recovery there but I keep getting recovery failed message.
- I tried factory resetting, still got the same recovery failed message.
- Tried the other factory reset method which deletes all files, still the same message.
- I tried plugging a USB Recovery drive and tried booting from it. But all I get is a black screen.

I'm out of ideas on what to do next.

Edit: Additional details:

I used to be able to get to the blue recovery screen where I tried to do a factory reset. Mid factory reset I got a "recovery failed" message and since then have been unable to go back to the blue recovery screen.

I can't access the bios / safe mode. I can only access the Lenovo recovery menu through pressing the recovery button on the left side of the laptop.

I get the "Diagnosing PC" / "Preparing to repair" message at startup when booting normally but anything after that are just black screens.

The quoted above is from my previous thread, I was advised to change my hard drive since it might be damaged.

I am about to order a hard drive so I take off my old hard drive to order the same exact model.

I need some final clarification if the hard drive really is the problem here. (Don't want to waste money buying a new HDD)

Here's what happened earlier:
I tried removing the hard drive from my laptop and plugged in my windows 8.1 recovery usb drive which I made from our desktop computer. I tried to boot up the laptop to see if it changes anything. I choose to boot from the USB and I was able to get into the blue windows recovery screen! But I could not do any of the recovery, my guess is because I don't have an HDD plugged in. I tried plugging the HDD back and I am not able to go back to the blue windows recovery screen.

So here's my final questions before I click the checkout button for the new HDD.
After what just happened is it really the HDD that's the problem here?
After I bought the new HDD do I just plug it in and I will be able to repair/recover the laptop?
Will I need to buy a new OS?

Sorry for the very long lines, I try to explain the problem as much as I can.

Thank you.

Solution
You likely need a new HDD as was said. Extra disks is never a waste of money.

You cannot repair or recover the failed disk, you will need to do a clean install using your recovery medium. You won't need a new license though.
