So here is the deal. I have a Toshiba Satellite P305 laptop that is currently running vista. I haven't used the laptop for a few years now and decided to bring out to clean it up and allow my nephew use it. I noticed that Microsoft no longer supports Vista. Everyone is saying to upgrade it to a 7 or newer, which I would be happy to do. The question is how and is it free? (I'm a Noob). I would have to also need to download the software on one PC and then take it to the laptop as the laptop has explorer which doesn't seem to be working very well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Solution

Purchase Win 10 Home
Boot from the DVD or USB you get
Install
During the install process, it will ask 'where'
Select Custom
You will be presented with a list of all existing partitions
Select each one, Delete. Leaving one large space.
Use that, letting the OS create what it needs.

It will work.
No, it is not free.
Upgrading to Win 7 or later will cost. About $90 USD.

Buying it will deliver a USB or DVD to your house. Or, a download link to create your own DVD or USB.

I have a similar Tosh L305.
2GB RAM, Celeron 2.2Ghz.
Running Win 10. It is slow, but no slower than it was originally.

But Win 10 will be a vastly better experience than Vista.

I've read that I wouldn't be able to upgrade from Vista to Win10, that I would have to upgrade to 7 first. Is this true?

There is no direct upgrade from Vista to 10.
But...either way, it will require an OS purchase.
So might as well just buy Win 10, and do a full wipe and install.
Trying an 'upgrade' from Vista to 7 and then to 10 will result in a poorly running system.

So since you have to buy a new OS anyway, just get Win 10 and do that.

The plan is to wipe the laptop clean. I want it to be almost as if it was just pulled out of the box. Then apply a new OS. Just don't know how to do it yet. I know how to do it on W10 as Ive done it with my desktop but Vista seems different.

vista is still supported till april. there's nothing wrong with running an "old" OS just get an antivirus and dont be stupid. i'm on windows xp and 98se, and have never gotten a virus.

thats not to say you should run an old OS.
