Question Updating Bios.

Hello all.

Just finished rebuilding my pc with a new motherboard, ram and cpu. I believe it needs a bios update before it can work but I am unsure what to do and fear bricking it. I have both the DRAM and CPU lights on they are solid.

Motherboard is ASRock B650M PRO RS AM5 AMD B650 Micro ATX
CPU is AMD Ryzen 5 9600X - Ryzen 5 9000 Series
Ram is Team T-Force Delta RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6400 (PC5 51200)

My PSU is the CX750M.

Yes, you'll need a BIOS update. Follow through this guide;

and you should be good to go after that.

How old is this unit? Is this the grey labelled unit or the green labelled unit? If the latter, throw it out the window.
It is 2 years old but during the 24 months its been used consistently for 6 or 7 months its barely used due to school. I dont recall seeing any green on it.

You need BIOS version 3.01 dated 2024/5/15 to boot the 9600X. Bearing in mind the latest BIOS is version 3.25 dated 2025/5/19, I'm surprised you need a new BIOS to POST and start installing an OS. How old is the board.

Do you get anything on your monitor screen that might allow you to check the BIOS version?

I am unsure what to do and fear bricking it.
I don't blame you for being cautious. So far I've not had to update a BIOS "blind" although I'm sure lots of people have performed the operation successfully.

It might be an idea to check with only one DIMM fitted (try it in each slot). If that fails, how confident are you there are no bent contacts in the CPU socket? If there's any doubt, carefully remove the CPU and check.

Do you have a fan connected to the main CPU fan header? Some motherboards refuse to POST if they don't detect a CPU cooling fan on the correct header.

I have combed over the box and there is nothing to indicate the year this particular board was made but everywhere I've read suggests bios update. I have tried a single ram stick. My CPU fans are running and spinning. I've left the computer on and running for minutes and it doesn't shut down which tells me its a good sign of no broken pins I'll try the bios update and give an update. Thank you
