Updating Bios

Hi, the last Bios date we have on our home built system is way back in June 2007. System has been running very well except for a very occasional boot up problem.
There are about 7 Bios updates available from the Asus Motherboard website.

My question: Do I have to update each Bios from starting 2007 to the current one?
The last 3 updates are Beta versions.
Would it be alright to skip the Beta Versions?
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

No, you do NOT have to go through the sequence. When you update a BIOS, EVERYTHING is re-written, no old stuff is preserved and altered. I'm a little surprised to hear there are THREE Beta versions that have not yet been fully approved. Personally, I'd stay away from those unless you are interested in being a tester who has to document and fix the occasional problem.

Usually, BIOS updates just add support for new CPU's or fix problems with specific hardware. You should check the release notes to see what was changed and then decide if you need the new features. If any of the updates address a problem with your hardware or you are trying to run a newer CPU then do the BIOS update. Otherwise, it's not really required.

Just out of curiosity, what is the model number of the motherboard? Sounds like a fairly old one.

Thank you both for your input. Our motherboard is a Asus P5K3 Deluxe.
Yes, I'm going to stay away from the Beta versions. There are 3 of them starting Feb.2009 to April 2009.
Some of the Bios Versions are supposed to modify the CPU temp. sensing and another fix a boot up problem.
This is the problem with our machine. Most of the time it boots up without any problem but once in a while I have to press F2 to continue and then everything is fine. I have kept the system up to date with drivers & windows but not the Bios.
So, thank you both very much. If you have any other ideas, I will appreciate it very much. Ann

Thanks Outlander4.....Hmmmm....now I'm getting worried again. I have been staying away all this time from upgrading the Bios on the desktop.
Have updated the Bios on our old laptop recently without any problem which gave me courage to do the desktop..
Our home built system has worked perfectly the last few years but now we want to sell it and want to make sure that everything continues to work well. It's mainly used for Flightsim 9.
We feel that it's still a good system. The reason we're selling is because Hubby is upgrading to Flightsim 10 and needs a more powerful machine.
Well, I will read the instructions very, very carefully and then maybe....Thanks again.

I agree, updating your BIOS is risky but it is often necessary. Since your system has a newer BIOS that addresses a bootup issue, it sounds like you have a good reason to do an update. The only question you need to ask is: Is it worth it to take the small chance that the update will fail and completely mess up the computer? Weigh that against the annoyance of having to hit F2 to finish the boot up once in a while.

Im only saying its really dangerous cause i bricked a mobo about a year ago from the official BIOS update which adds usb keyboard support to BIOS. To bad i didn't read comments about the BIOS update before i tried to update, because apparently everyone who applied the update bricked their mobos.
