Hello I'm looking for advice on upgrading my motherboard, cpu and memory for gaming. I'm not looking to spend more than $800. Currently one channel on my mobo doesn't recognize ram so I'm only able to run 12gb.

What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
Is OC your thing? Then change to OC capable CPU would be necessary.
Probably should add SSD also, if you don't have any.

AMD build, the 970 is a bit unnecessary as its performance increase over an M.2 SSD in games is negligible. The i7 930 is 9 years old so i'm thinking the PSU is similar and definitely needs an upgrade. You can add cooling to this if your'e going for a heavy overclock or maybe splurge and get the 2700x.

I left out that I do have a SSD Samsung 970 Evo. I want a system that is overclocked out of the box and upgradable in the future. Which is the better value per performance Intel or AMD? Do you think I can wait to upgrade my GPU considering the current Nvidia market?

Thanks for the reply I'm not getting notifications. I forgot to include my Samsung 970 Evo SSD in my specs. I could probably spend a little more on a cpu which cpu is the best bang for the buck AMD or Intel? Do you think I should wait to upgrade my GPU considering the current gpu market?

Intel is not upgradeable in the future, once they go to their 10 series, you can be pretty much assured you will need a complete new motherboard by the time that comes out. Intel never let more than 2 generations of CPU's work on a previous motherboard, even though they can with a BIOS hack, Intel forbids it.
You can go AMD because it will last to 2020 and probably a bit beyond.
Major changes will happen whemn DDR5 finally gets released. Maybe 2020, but AMD will keep you going longer than Intel will. For instance, their 7th Gen chips lasted 9 months.

My current build has lasted me for 8 years. That's the kind of longevity I'm looking for. What do you recommend?

Lets see what has happened over the last 8 years
More Cores and More Threads = the computer has longevity
Old I7' still work well, because of 4 cores and 8 threads where as the i5's are struggling.

So if you went with either 6 core/12 threads or 8 core/16 threads I think you will be good for the next 4-5 years at least.
