Just bought my son a 'gaming' desk top and he already wants to update the graphics card. He currently has GT 730, AMD FX 4300 Quad Core 3.8ghz processor and an Allied Atx 350w PSU. Will the GeForce 1050 Ti be compatible or will he need to upgrade other things, as well?

Solution
The GTX 1050 Ti is compatible, however, to set expectations he's not going to get the wow factor he's hoping for from the upgrade....He may see a few more frames per second in games and be able to turn up the odd graphics settings, but that FX4300 isn't the greatest CPU.

Its a difficult call as there are things you could do to improve the system he has, but they all cost money and even then its not going to be a rig that can make the most recent AAA titles shine.....

the 1050 ti would crush that card but with that cpu its not going to hit full potential,
maybe if he oc the cpu to squeeze a bit more performance out of it, it would close the bottleneck
but then again upgrading cost money.
if you dont mind, going with the fx 8350 for the cpu upgrade would help with the performance, but that cpu is ok for the time being
then again going too far on upgrades can leave the psu not up to task.
for upgrades the 350w psu is the letdown
but for the "compatibility" side of things it should be fine with the current setup
also pay attention to the ram, 8gb is the ideal-minimums for gaming, going lower and performance would suffer
just dont expect to run everything on max on newer titles, it just wont cut it

My two cents: First, the 730 is in fact strangling gameplay, even if it's a DDR5 model it's just not a powerful card. The 1050 Ti will vastly improve gameplay on a huge amount of games. There are some newer games, ie Battlefield 1, where the 4300 is going to be what holds back performance. I would not buy another CPU for this system, I don't think it's worth it at this point. Allied is a crap brand of power supply, the sooner you get a decent one the better. Replace that 730, even a regular 1050 will make a massive difference.
