Updating graphics drivers messes up my PC

Right basically I have fresh install of Windows 7 Professional and every time I update my graphics card drivers (downloaded from nvidia's site) I launch my PC and all I can see if the Windows desktop logo and no taskbar and all of that, I know it works as I hear system sounds and ctrl + alt + del just leads to a black screen, I tried reinstalling windows, trying a different version of windows, formatting my hard drive etc etc, any help is greatly appreciated!

Do you have or did you have a 2nd monitor attached? It almost looks like what you would see on the 2nd monitor at booting to the desktop. They may have swapped.
