Updating my HDD with an SSD on a Samsung Chronos 7: help

Looking to put a SATA III into my Chronos 7, it currently has a 1 TB, 5400 rpm, 3 Gb/sec HDD. Can I use an SSD faster than 3 Gb? Is it worth it? Suggestions on which SSD?

yes you can use an ssd faster than 3gb because ssd's are backwards compatible . if you plan on using your computer for
regular tasks such as email, website browsing, etc I would get the samsung 840 evo.

yes, but what's the point of going with a faster GB/s SSD when it will be limited in the first place, save your money and get an SSD that is 3GB/s, still faster then your HDD just your not wasting your money for no improvement.

How much SSD storage space do you want? And Budget?

Sata 2 ssds will be older, so less mature, less reliable controllers and its's likely you won't even be able to find any new. You will only hit the limit (even on sata 1) only in sequential which is rare for a normal pc user. Toms's even did an article if you really need sata 3. The answer was "not at all."

Storage isn't as important as speed for me. It seems there are differing opinions on whether it's worth paying for faster than what the original HDD was -that is, if I install an ssd at 6 mb/sec, will it still only run at 3 mb/sec? I'm not sure what "backwards compatible" refers to, could you clarify? Thanks for the help!

Generally sata 2 ssds are around the same price as sata 3 ssds. If you install a 6gb/sec ssd it can only run at a max of 3GB/sec. also backwards compatible means that a sata 3 ssd will work on a computer with only sata 2 support .
buying a sata 3 ssd is worth it. If storage isnt as important for you then I recommend getting a ssd with at least 120gb of space (that should be good enough for the average user). You can find these types of ssd from 60-85$.

Any modern hdd or ssd you find today will be sata 3 and you don't want to be looking at old stuff anyways. Sata is backwards and forwards compatible which means all sata versions will work with each other. You can have a sata 2 device in a sata 3 port or a sata 3 in a sata 1 port, etc. Doesn't matter. It's sata, it works, but the speed will depend on the port. You never mentioned which chronos 7 you have but if it's 2012 or later, it has sata 3 (6gbps). But what version isn't really important. Getting an ssd will improve the speed over a hdd regardless. A samsung 840 evo is a good choice. They aren't too expensive but are one of the best.
