updating - please wait message

While automatically updating Windows 8, for the past 30 hours the message "please wait" has appeared on the screen and I can't get it to do anything. What is the solution to this "please wait" message? I cannot get to the desktop or anywhere else.

Sounds like something went wrong. Use the power button for a hard reset. The update should start again.

I have tried that multiple times and no luck. When I turn it back on, after waiting a while, it immediately go to the "Please wait" message and stays there.

Do you have Avast installed on your computer? If so, remove it.
