I have a home server with a HighPoint 2310 PCIE-4x 4-port SATAII RAID controller, currently handling four 500GB drives. I need to upgrade the drives to a larger size, and am seeking advice on which drives would be most appropriate. The OS is Windows Home Server 2011, the system runs 24/7, most of the storage is documents and photos* although there is some streaming, and almost all of the other systems are on a wired gigabit network.

* When you have kids, you'll understand why we have nearly a gig of photos. 😀

7200 vs 5400 RPM? I'm partial to WD, so which 'colors' would give me the best value and performance? Any other advice or things to be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

Solution
WD Red is all I would really recommend.

1, 2 or 3 TB in size. Mainly for the reliability and they are RAID ready. Price is fair, below the enterprise drives but a bit more than consumer desktop drivers.
