Hello thanks for the help.

So i know this is a bit last minute and all... But Cyber Monday is well tomorrow.

I currently am unable to play Star Citizen at all... it is still not optimized but wow its pretty (alpha and all). Total war hammer 2 is giving me problems sometimes as well.

Current build is :
i5-2500k OC 4.5Ghz 16G Corsair Vengeance xFx Radon R9-390P 8g (i also have a R9-290 8G that i wanted to see if i could run in crossfire...) ASUS P867
Pro, 120G SSD Corsar ,3 (OS and games) 500G hard Drive (storage and games), 250GS
SSD Cruix (games) ,OS windows 7 ultimit 64bit, PSU 850W OCZ

SO this is old.... system can no longer overclock not sure why. IF I over clock cpu to more old and normal settings of 4.5ghz blue screen memory dump. (possible problem with memory)

Is there anyway to make this a good step up for $500? like new unlocked cpu and mbo with ram? just don'st seem possible.

like to hear your thoughts thanks a lot. :D

If you can hold out for a couple of months until next year then i would do that and get a Ryzen 2 CPU those things will to be interesting for sure! If not you could get yourself a Ryzen 1600x + a cheap B350 motherboard & 8gb DDR4 3000mhz ram kit, sell the R9 290/390 and buy yourself a GTX 1070 or keep the 390 and buy another 16gb 3000Mhz kit instead/M.2 NVME 256gb SSD drive = win that's what i would do.

You could buy some kind of a Ryzen cpu with a cheap motherboard (make sure it's compatible with overclocking) and probably wait for RAM to get cheaper. You could also just upgrade the gpu to a gtx 1070 (saw some for $400 and less). I have personally used the card and before it I had the R9 390 MSI Gaming edition, which was a big step up.

Your CPU should be ok. Your CPU, even not overclocked, is "ok". I think best upgrade would be just upgrade the GPU for now. Most games are GPU bound not CPU bound.

That is a nice 1070ti with dual fans for 470. The 3 fan version is 30 more. Which one is better depends on how much you plan to OC your graphics card.

On your CPU not overclocking. They do decay over time. It is possible this is your issue.

A replacement of both CPU, MB, GPU and ram for 500 that would match (or even come close) the performance of just swapping the GPU is not possible for $500.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor ($199.89 @ B&H)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - Z370 HD3 (rev. 1.0) ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($101.49 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($154.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Zotac - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB AMP! Edition Video Card ($269.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $726.36

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor ($189.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($84.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($154.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Zotac - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB AMP! Edition Video Card ($269.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $699.86

Both builds for roughly comparable performance are 700. The Intel is faster at gaming, the AMD is faster at other stuff.

Bjornl, thanks for the detailed information.

Unfortunately Star citizen is pretty heavy on the CPU as well as the GPU...

I have been trying not to upgrade b.c i hate wasting money. (don't we all)

Well Starcitizen has been on my radar for a long time. I am just waiting for a more finished product. If you need closer to a "new-pair of everything" best budget for at least 700.
