So I want to update the motherboard on my now 3 year old Dell XPS 8100, Can I buy a whole new ASUS motherboard or something of that nature, or do I have to stay with a Dell based motherboard, also if so, can I put say a 8300 or 8700 XPS motherboard instead?

Solution
Odds are a new different (not the same model - or at least not a dell) is going to require you to by a new Windows license.
OEM's (Dell, HP, etc tie their OEN versions of Windows to the mobo/bios and your windows will not activate with a new mobo.
