I just installed Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (Service Pack 1) on a compaq PII
400 mhz. Everything was installed and set up properly, and it is working well
with my home network, but I can't get it to install updates. I run the "old"
looking internet explorer that was installed with the OS, and I can surf the
web, but the color (only 16 bit because of incompatibility with my NEC
monitor...which i figured would be fixed after running windows update) was
garbled on any website and I was constantly redirected to a page saying that
I needed a higher version of Internet Explorer with ActiveX controls in order
to use windows update.

Problem: When I go to manually download a new service pack of Win NT Work.
or IE, I am redirected to an error page.

How do I update this OLD Windows NT version?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Go here and download (network install) SP4,
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4SvcPk4/NT4SvcPk4.asp

install it then use this article to download and install at least IE5
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=174680

then go here and install SP6A
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/SP6/allSP6.asp

(you probably need at least SP3 or SP4 in order to install your graphics
adapter driver.)

Why do you recommend installing SP4 ?

Why not just install SP6A from here ?
http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntsp/Install/6.0a/NT4/EN-US/sp6i386.exe

Bruce

p.s. The above is the "standard encryption" version. This will be the
version required to update a new installation of NT. The 128 version is
http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntsp/SP/6.0a-128/NT4/EN-US/sp6i386.exe

Been a while but I don't think it installs with the base version of IE that
gold Windows NT comes with.

IIRC, installing IE4 required the minimum of SP4, and this
was the process due to Y2K. But the better alternative might
well be to borrow versions of SP6a and IE6 that have already
been transferred to cd-r and ready for doing the updating.
To set up Windows NT today (and we still have to do several
a year), we go next to SP6a and IE6-SP1, and then customize.

I had to repair an NT workstation installation the problem was that NT
wouldn't load because a kernel file was missing as the result of an
anti-virus program. The machine was running service pack 6. The Emergency
Repair Disk was made after the system had been rebuilt and when NT loaded a
PCI board controller, which set up would not recognize was absent, only 8
gigs of the hard drive was recognized and as one partition AND an ATAPI zip
drive was recognized as a floppy disk but not as a zip drive - i.e., the
iomega software did not recognize it. The other thing is there is no browser
functionality and no outlook express. The blue screen says it's running SP6.
I tried to apply the 128 bit version of SP 4 which I had on a CD and received
an installation error message the SP6 version in the CD requires an internet
connection which this machine doesn't have. So I'm trying to create a CD ROM
with SP6a on it that I can install to the other machine. Any suggestions or
assistance would be greatfully appreciated. TIA.
