I have a i3 6100 cpu with the gtx 1050ti and am wondering what better cpu I could throw in. Looking to play pretty demanding games and wanna make sure I'll be able to do so.

My reason for the question is to find out if it is an overclocking motherboard. Chances are since he has a 6100, he was on a budget when he made the purchase. This would mean the k cpus are out as it would be a waste to put one on a non overclocking board. Depending on the motherboard he could go all the way up to an i7 7700, as long as he updated the bios first. Of course if he has a z mb the options open up a bit.

I like that idea, I may do that myself. hehe. Though I can't see it going for that price. More like under 300 dollars knowing Intel

Well they are showing specs for a six-core i5-8400, let's just hope they use the same pricing they have been to gain back the ground they lost to AMD with the Ryzen 5 1600.

That doesn't mean he can't use a K series, and there would still be a point in using a K series on a non-Z mobo. K series do have higher stock clocks; enough to consider. But will still need an aftermarket cooler.

It's a Asus H110M-A- LGA 1151 I'd rather not switch if I don't need to.

I would seriously wait and see what happens with Coffee Lake as others have suggested. The 1050ti is pretty well matched to your current i3, so it's not like you're going to be massively held back.

As others have said, there's a chance you're a couple of months away from getting a 6 core for less money than you're currently getting that 7700K. Coffee Lake may well **not** be compatible with your mobo, but it might too. All I'm saying is it's definitely worth waiting and seeing. Especially given that a 7700K won't make much difference until you upgrade your GPU anyway.

Do you know if your games are cpu limited or graphics limited?
You could buy your new game and find out then.
Or, you could do some tests now:
Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer with many participants tend to like many threads.

You need to find out which.
------------------------------------------------------------
To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

If you want to go to a 7 series kaby lake cpu, you will need to check the bios level of your H110 motherboard and update it using your current 6 series cpu.

The big plus of a i7-7700K is that it runs stock at a good clock rate of 4.2.
No overclocking is really necessary.
