Upgradding my 960

Hello everyone, i need some help on deciding an upgrade, i currently have a gtx 960 4gb and plan on going into vr and graphic heavy single player games (like assassins creed) i originally planned on an evga 1070 but their prices spiked so im unsure what to upgrade too. I would like to keep it around 500 since i still have to buy a vr kit but if theres a far superiour option for the money ill wait to buy the vr.

Well, at 1080p in non V/R your CPU will be a limitation with a GTX 1080. So, if you don't have a budget perhaps a new CPU/Mobo/DDR4 RAM. Intel's 9th-gen is releasing soon.
