For work, I run a program (Chief Architect) that has an internal raytrace program to create 3D images. According to tech support, the program uses the cpu, not gpu to process the images, and # of cores is the #1 determining factor in performance, and clock speed is important, but secondary.

I currently have an overclocked 2600k (4.7) that runs well, no problems and runs at 100% 20-30 hrs a week. My question, is, would dual E5-2650's, with increased cores, but lower clock speed be a logical upgrade?

I would most likely build new, instead of trying to upgrade what I have, but all other components would be similar (dual vid cards, ssd, liquid cooled).

I am looking at the 2650's, because I am trying to keep the build under 5k.

Thanks!

Problem with dual cpu setups is they tend to require ECC ram which can get expensive. You might want to look into going with LGA2011 and the 6 core ivy-e when they are released, which should be soon.
Thanks, but I the cost of the ram is not as much of a big deal as the cost of the cpu's for sure!! I am just wondering if going from 4 to 16 cores at a lower clock speed is going to give me a significant upgrade
