I know that I'm in need of a new CPU (currently have i5-6500) but I'm stuck between my choices. On one hand it seems like a no brainer to go with the Ryzen but my current motherboard supports the 7700k.

Ryzen 5 6500.
Pros: Better performance, technically cheaper price, new motherboard will allow for faster ram speed.
Cons: Will have to buy new motherboard/new OS.

i7-7700k
Pros: No need to buy motherboard, overclockable.
Cons: Only supports up to 2133mz ram speed, less performance.

Since the i7 is still a great improvement over what I have and still a good CPU, I don't mind the slightly less performance it gets compared to the 3600. But is it worth spending the extra for the 3600 and the faster ram speeds or would it be smarter to save a little money and still get a good CPU?

The rest of my specs are the RTX 2060 and 16gb of ddr4 3200mz (Currently throttled at 2133mz).

OK, first of all you don't need an X570 motherboard for Ryzen 5 3600, in fact you don't want the cheap MSI ones. If you like MSI pick the B450 Tomahawk MAX, it will cost you less than 100 bucks, and its probably good enough to even run the Ryzen 9 3900X too.

Also, you can get a W10 serial for 5 bucks --> ebay -> paypal -> W10 key :)

Just to be clear most, if not all cheap X570 MSI mothebroard have really low end budget VRM and bad heatsinks configurations. If you wana get a cheap, yet good X570 mobo, I would pick Asus TUF Gaming X570 Plus or X570 Plus Wifi instead. More on that:

I think is an easy choice, Does your motherboard support overclocking ?

- YES: Ok, then new question How much is the I7 7700K?
-- If its cheaper than buying an R5 3600+Mobo, then well not a horrible choice to buy the i7 7700K.
-- if its around the same or even more than the cost of the R5 3600+Mobo, then I will get the R5 3600 and try to sell my old parts.

- NO: Go buy the R5 3600

Also, Whats your current Motherboard (Brand and Model)?

I see, thats a hard one.

So what how much is the extra cost for the 3600+Mobo?
$200 for the 3600 and for the motherboard I picked out (MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge Motherboard) it's another $200. But I'm more than likely gonna have to get a new OS as well which will be an extra 100-150 depending on who I buy it from. Meanwhile, for $350, I could get the 7700k.

Cost. If you can get a 7700k for cheap. Like around 100 usd on the high end. it's a good upgrade. Cheaper the better, but alot of people reallyover value old cpus. A 4 core 8 thread CPU nowadays is not premium.

If it's closer to 150 skip it and go for the 3600 and new mobo.

Awesome. Thanks for help! I'll probably just have to wait for my next paycheck to really see what I can do but this will definitely make my decision easier.

The price of the 7700k is a huge turnoff, imo. That with the fact you don't have a z series board and wouldn't get the full potential of the cpu, makes the ryzen a seemingly easy choice! You already have fast ram, so the 3600/b450 combo comes in less than just the chip. Add in the cost of a decent cooler and that 7700k is going to end up more like 400.

I'm currently on a 7700 and highly considering the 3600 myself! If I hadn't scored my cpu from recycled pc at work, I'd already have one. I searched high and low, and the best price on a used 7700k was still over $200.

Go with the ryzen! Gaming would be within a couple fps. Newer games will run smoother with the AMD too as itll have more cores/threads. Making 1% and .1% better. And if you do anything cpu intensive it'll crush the 7700k.
