I'm looking to upgrade my cpu I have a i5 4670k and looking at a 1600x i5 8400 or 8600x I have a evga 1060 ftw+ I would be upgrading my ram to 2x8gb ddr4 3000MHz vengeance. I will only use my pc for gaming at 1080p might have discord open as well but I'm not streaming. 8400 and 8600k seem better at gaming on 1080p at the moment but will the ryzen get optimised with in the next 2 years to beat the i5? Time of writing this ryzen 1600x £147 i5 8400 £163 i5 8600k £190 pound but have seen on sale for around 165 pounds and it overclocks really well, all of these cpu will get the most out of my 1060 but I would be thinking of a 2070 or 2080 in a year's time? What cup is best buy and will last the longest before needing to upgrade

The 8600k is the best gaming cpu. You cannot guess what will happen in the future, some people did that with the old FX series claiming it would catch up but that never happened. I’d only base a decision on facts you have today.

However for 1080p 60Hz and therefore 60fps it really doesn’t matter. All 3 CPU’s are more than capable of this and I doubt you would tell them apart in real world gaming experience.

At higher FPS for a high Hz monitor the 8600k has the best potential but you would have to use a gpu much stronger than a 1060 to utilise that extra potential for higher FPS that an 8600k provides.
Yeah, you're talking about all the options you have for upgrading but you didn't mention WHY are you upgrading. What you choose depends on what is not performing well for you now, and how much more performance you want.

Remember, you will be buying a CPU, motherboard, and DDR4 ram. That's a fair amount of expense for no particular reason other than 'better at gaming' whatever that means. However, if I had to predict the future, what I'd predict is that people with a 4 core/8 thread modern CPU or better are going to be set at CPU for a long time. People with 4 cores/4 threads or 6 cores/6 threads are the ones who might be needing a bit more performance sooner rather than later.

The RTX stuff is a non issue to me. The tech and games aren't available yet, so there's no real way to predict anything about it. It could turn out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or it could be one of those features no one ever uses.
