Alright guys... here's the scoop.. currently running an old athlon 1ghz overclocked to 1.4ghz.

I'm planning on a mobo/cpu/ram upgrade, all other perifs are solid.

I've come up with this so far, all from newegg to reduce shipping costs:

Athlon XP-M 2500+ 88.00
DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra B 125.00
OCZ-PC4000 EL Gold Rev 2. (2x512) 280.50
Shipping 14.44

Total 507.94

Now for no more than $550.00, with a minimum capability (I'm hoping) of 250mhz fsb, and 1GB of ram, find me your best setup. Just curious, and all in good fun.

I do have a watercooled setup, so overclocking is the plan... I'm hoping 2.8ghz with that rig.

Not trying to prove anything here, just trying to get the best bang for the buck. Wanted to get some other ideas in case I havn't fully read up on things so far.

thx.

An NF7-S wiil get you there cheaper. DFI does make a quality board too.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

The NF7-S v2.0 is a great board but it has it's flaws. First off it typically hits a ceiling at 227 fsb, you can get higher with a modded BIOS though. Second, and most annoying, is that it has a REALLY shaky voltage regulator, producing core voltage sags that can force one to have to raise the Vcore higher than normal to compensate. Causing warmer than average idle temps. not neccessarily a problem per-se. But definitely an annoyance........

P.S. All bitching aside, I own one of these boards and I love it. It has to be one of the best pieces of equipment I've ever purchased. Just felt like playing devil's advocate 😉

ABIT NF7-S v2.0
Athlon Mobile 2600+ 45-watt (IQYHA) (11x227) 1.825v
GeForce 5900 (BIOS modded to 5950 Ultra)
Kingston HyperX PC4000 1x512 (2.5-4-3-7)

Homework time? Okay, okay.. (as he heads to bios, slacks mem timings and goes 10x250).....

Well my thoughts have changed since I first posted this thread.

Currently I'm looking at:
A64 3000+
Neo2 Plat board
G.Skill PC4400 ram 2x512

Probably all in all about 100 bucks more than the previous decision, and what I think, a better overall rig.

Smart move. Socket A is kind of a dead platform. Just put a K8N-Neo PLatinum together myself. Love it!
