Upgrade check / PSU sufficient?

Hi all,

after 8 years I think it is finally time to upgrade my Lynnfield build... I really want to hit up P3dv4 (Flight Sim) with some good addons and nice FPS, so after doing some research I think the following system should do the job and I should be more than set for the upcoming years, right?

- MSI Z370 Gaming Plus
- i7-8700K
- G.SKill AEGIS 32GB Kit DDR4-3000 CL16 (is this overkill? Should I stick to 16GB?)
- Noctua NH-D15S

1.) I will use my old GTX 970 for the start but will think about upgrading it to a 1080TI or maybe even a new RTX card (any ideas what to do? Will the prices for 1080TI's drop?)

2.) Can i continue to use my current PSU (be quiet! Pure Power 10 CM - 500W) without any problem, if I plan to overclock the CPU and upgrade the GPU to a high end one?

Hope you can help me solve this or give any other helpful recommendations :)

Best Regards,
Soeren

That is a good PSU. While it is enough for your new build with the 960, it might not be sufficient for a stronger card like 1080ti/2080ti, specially if you are overclocking. Those are your 200w+ cards. You will need atleast a 650w or above.

Okay thanks I was hoping I didn't have to buy a new one as I just bought the 500w one a year ago, but I guess I have no choice. Can still resell I guess.

Any ideas about the graphics? Should I buy a 1080TI or wait for the RTX 2070?

Based on the benches and speculation so far the 2070 is no faster, history shows its unlikely to be faster as well. The 1080ti is positively cheap right now, you are better off IMO.

Yeah I'm on the watch for a cheap 1080 TI every day, I will buy one when one is around 600€ i think. Yesterday there was an Asus 1080TI turbo for 550€, but I read the cooler is not the best and so I rather wait a few more days/weeks. Hopefully prices will drop even more on better 1080ti's.

They will but be ready to strike. Often they will drop, be available for a couple weeks or less, and then be gone.
